NETHERLANDS – The European Union’s internal markets commissioner Frits Bolkestein is set to speak at the International Corporate Governance Network’s ninth annual conference in Amsterdam in July.

Other speakers at the “Making Corporate Governance Work” event taking place from July 9-11 include top managers from Dutch pension funds Stichting Pensioenfonds ABP and PGGM as well as US funds CalPERS and TIAA-CREF.

ABP Investments’ chairman Jean Frijns will speak on a panel discussion, as will Dick de Beus, chairman of the managing board of Zeist-based PGGM. Giving the US perspective will be Mark Anson, the chief investment officer of California Public Employees Retirement System and TIAA-CREF’s senior vice president Peter Clapman.

Derek Higgs, the author of the Higgs Review of non-executive directors, is also set to speak, as is ICGN chairman Alastair Ross Goobey.

The ICGN has broadly welcomed the UK’s Higgs Review, though it says it could benefit from some “modest redrafting”. Today is the deadline for submissions to the body’s draft statement on institutional shareholder responsibilities.
