Cuan Coulter is the new head of State Street Global Advisors’ (SSgA) operations in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), IPE has learned.

He will replace Mike Karpik, who is leaving the company, following a transition period over the summer.

Coulter is currently chief compliance officer for State Street Corporation. He joined the group in 2008 as head of North American compliance, and previously worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers for more than 12 years.

He reports to Jeff Conway, EMEA chief executive for State Street Corporation, and Ron O’Hanley, global CEO of SSgA, the investment management arm of State Street.

Karpik has worked for State Street for 19 years, becoming head of EMEA in 2012. He was made head of investments for EMEA in 2009, and has worked in various senior positions in operations, product development, and cash investment.

In addition, Rory Tobin, currently co-head of State Street’s SPDR exchange-traded funds (ETFs) business, is to become chairman of SSgA. He joined the firm in late 2014 from Barclays Asset Management, where he was CEO. He held a similar role at Barclays Global Investors, the ETFs business that is now BlackRock’s iShares.

Earlier this year SSgA hired BlackRock’s Canadian chief Noel Archard to the newly created role of head of global SPDR product. The group also appointed Seth Morrison, previously head of business development for Vanguard, as head of global SPDR marketing, also a new role.

[Note: A previous version of this story stated that Cuan Coulter was chief compliance officer for SSgA. It has been updated to clarify that his role covers the whole State Street group.]
