SPAIN – A new survey has found that pensions are the main worry for 60% of Spanish people over 65 years old, with solitude and health the next biggest worries.

A survey of 1,400 elderly Spaniards by Barcelona-based La Caixa savings bank found that the main worry of those over 65 was pensions (60%), solitude and boredom (46%) and health (39%).

For 80% of those over 65 practically the only source of regular income is the state pension, the bank said. And 25% of over 65s, mostly women, receive money from relatives.

Twenty-five percent of those surveyed said they were able to save. La Caixa said the over-65s account for 6.8 million, or 16%, of Spain’s total population; 2.8 million are men and four million are women.

The survey was conducted by La Caixa’s life arm VidaCaixa in collaboration with Ipsos-Eco Consulting.
