NORWAY - Ballangen kommune in Norway is seeking a provider to run the occupational pension scheme for the municipality.

The municipality of Ballangen, in the county of Nordland, is requesting tenders for providing the occupational pension scheme, in compliance with the main tariff agreement of the Norwegian Association of Local and Regional Authorities.

The successful provider will be expected to run the scheme in accordance with the rules for contractual pension (AFP) and the rules for occupational pension schemes (TPO).

It is expected three providers will be shortlisted to participate in the tender, although Ballangen admitted it has already selected three initial candidates for the process - KLP; Storebrand and Vital.

The search for a municipal pension provider follows similar actions by other Norwegian municipalities over the past few months, as Storfjord Kommune issued a tender for a provider for a state scheme in August. (See earlier IPE article: Storfjord seeks provider for state scheme)

Meanwhile the municipalities of Ski, Skedsmo and Kongsvinger have all initiated searches for new providers of the occupational scheme, while Baerum announced its intention to design a new scheme for municipal employees in response to the large economic challenge the area faces between 2008-11. (See earlier IPE articles: AFP contributions rose 12.4% in 2007 and Baerum seeks help establishing new pension fund)

The closing date for applications to tender for the role is 20 October 2008, and the contract will then be awarded to the most economically-advantageous submission.
