A significant political hurdle to reform Italian state pensions may have been overcome, with the news that the unreformed communist party, Rifondazione Comunista (RC), has accepted the need for welfare reform including some pensions cutbacks.

The Olive-tree coalition government requires the support of RC for a majority in Parliament. Negotiations on welfare reform between government, business and trade unions be-gan this month.
