Herman Bril at ABP

Dutch civil service scheme ABP has appointed Herman Bril as its new chief investment officer. Bril has succeeded interim-CIO Jack Julicher as of 1 January 2026.

Bril has also joined €531bn ABP’s executive board as part of his new job.

Before joining ABP, Bril worked as head of sustainability and climate innovation at PSP Investments, the Canadian public sector pension fund.

Before that, he served as CIO of the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund in New York between 2016 and 2021. Bril also worked for Cardano, Aegon and Interpolis.

The appointment marks the end of a three-year period during which ABP did not have a functioning permanent CIO.

Dominique Dijkhuis, the last person to have held the job on a permanent basis, departed the fund in 2024 after having been on sick leave since early 2023.

She was first succeeded on an interim-basis by Rianne Lemsom and, during the past year, by Jack Julicher, who returned from retirement to assume the role.

An ABP spokesperson declined to answer why it took so long for ABP to find a permanent replacement for Dijkhuis.

ABP is currently in the process of implementing a new investment strategy.

Separately, ABP also appointed Carla van der Weerdt-Norder as a non-executive board member. She served as chief risk officer at Triodos Bank between 2019 and 2024.
