EUROPE - Tarja Filatov, Finland's Minister of Labour, is to chair a meeting of European ministers on Friday that will discuss the Commission's proposed directive on pensions portability.

The meeting of the Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council in Brussels will consider a new draft of the much-criticised proposal. The Commission will be represented by Social Affairs Commissioner Vladimir Spidla.

"Ministers will discuss the Commission's proposal for a directive to improve the portability of supplementary pension rights," the Commission said.

"The proposal aims to enable workers to move freely around EU and national labour markets without losing important work pension benefits."

Meanwhile, the European Construction Industry Federation has stated it questions the overall effects of the European Commission's proposed directive on pensions portability.

The Federation has indicated that employees should be able to take their secondary pensions with them when working abroad. 

The FIEC indicates that the proposed directive as it stands improves overall mobility and competitiveness of the sector.
