Klaus Stiefermann has been elected president of PensionsEurope, the European umbrella organisation for pension funds.
The president of the German federation for occupational pensions (aba) had already served two two-year terms as vice-president.
Stiefermann is the third to serve as PensionsEurope chair this year after Jacques Van Dijk succeeded Jerry Moriarty, who had stepped down for personal reasons in April.
Stiefermann was elected during PensionsEurope’s general assembly meeting last week. He does not lack experience in pensions, having served as president of aba since 1999.
Alongside Stiefermann, Ann Verlinden (Belgium) and Carolina Fernandez (Spain) were re-elected as vice-presidents.
PensionsEurope’s previous president, van Dijken, who had only been serving since April, could not stand for re-election as the Dutch pension federation recently decided to cancel its PensionsEurope membership effective 1 January 2026.
Stiefermann’s appointment coincided with the presentation of the Supplementary Pension Package by the European Commission that same day.
“The Pension Package shows that the cooperation between national associations and PensionsEurope is more important than ever. In the coming weeks, we will carefully examine whether the proposals are suitable to meet the European Commission’s objective,” he commented.
PensionsEurope director Matti Leppälä declined to comment on the Commission’s proposals, which include additional reporting requirements on underperformance and changes to the European third-pillar product PEPP. He said that PensionsEurope was still “preparing its positions”.
