Ärzteversorgung Westfalen-Lippe (AVWL), the €16bn pension fund for doctors in Germany’s Westphalia-Lippe region, has appointed Lutz Horstick as its new chief investment officer and member of the executive management team, effective from 1 August.
Horstick, currently AVWL’s head of securities and loans division, succeeds Markus Altenhoff, who is stepping down from his roles as chair and head of the investment division for health reasons, the pension fund announced today.
Altenhoff took over as chair from Christian Mosel, who left the pension fund in 2024 for undisclosed personal reasons.
In a statement, ÄVWL said Horstick’s appointment ensured the management responsibilities for the pension fund’s day-to-day operations would remain “fully and seamlessly covered”.
The chair of the ÄVWL administrative committee, Peter Czeschinski, said that in Horstick the pension fund had gained an experienced executive for the management team.
“Horstick is familiar with the structures of our pension fund, the professional requirements of the investment division and the collaboration with the administrative bodies. This provides an excellent foundation for reliably continuing the work in this area,” Czeschinski said.
The new CIO has been employed by ÄVWL since 2011. As a member of the executive board, Horstick will oversee the functioning of the investment division that, in addition to securities and loans, also includes the management of the real estate portfolio, and ESG, ÄVWL added in the statement.
Last year, ÄVWL expanded its management team to include three members – up from two – while creating three main business divisions.
The management committee includes now Horstick, responsible for the investment management division; Ulrich Sonnemann, who continues to lead the internal administration division; and Christian Koopmann, that remains in charge of the insurance operations and IT division.
