The Bank of England has told American institutions that the City of London will be ready to compete in the new euro environment from its start date of January 1999.

David Clementi, deputy director of the Bank of England told New York's financial institutions that the City will offer the full range of euro services in wholesale financial markets, efficiently and competitively.

London will act as a link between New York and the euro," he said."
