SWEDEN – The Swedish government has named Bengt Westerberg as the new chairman of financial regulator Finansinspektionen, or Financial Supervisory Authority.

He is a former deputy prime minister and chairman of telecoms group Telia. He is also a former leader of Sweden's right of centre People’s Party.

His appointment follows the appointment of Ingrid Bonde as general director of the FI in November. She took up her new role at the start of this month.

At the time of Bonde’s appointment, deputy finance minister Gunnar Lund said: "The FSA is facing serious challenges. The marketplace has seen a tremendous rise in activity in recent years and international reform is taking place.”
