NETHERLANDS - Dutch finance minister Gerrit Zalm has appointed Jaap Winter to the supervisory board of the Financial Markets Authority (AFM).

The AFM is charged with ensuring the fair and orderly functioning of the Dutch financial markets.

Winter is a partner at the law firm De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek and is an authority in corporate governance

He told IPE that he had been given no specific responsibility on the board as it operates as a collective.

“However, I expect my background as a lawyer will play a role,” he said. “But I will not only be focusing on legal issues. Other issues that will emerge in the future will definitely have my full attention too.”

Currently, he is also a professor of international company law at the University of Amsterdam and is a visiting lecturer at Colombia Law School NY. He has chaired the EU high level group on company law, is a member of the Tabaksblat committee and is chairman of the committee on the modernising of investment institutions.
