IPE AWARDS - Finland's Ilmarinen was named Best European Pension Fund 2006 at the sixth annual IPE Awards ceremony in Paris today.

The €21.6bn fund also scooped three other awards, for Best Industry-wide Pension Fund, Commodities Investment and Portfolio Construction/Management.

The award citation referred to Ilmarinen's decision to rebuild its commodities portfolio, its hedge fund investment strategy and its risk management.

"Whichever way you look at it, when you bring it all together, given the number of areas where Ilmarinen displays leadership and innovation, it could have entered many other categories and walked away with more than ‘just' four IPE Awards," said IPE Editor Fennell Betson.

Anne Maher, the former Chief Executive of the Ireland's Pensions Board, scooped the Outstanding Industry Contribution award. "It says much a person when a pensions regulator heads the poll for this Award," Betson said, adding her combined role as pensions supervisor and policy adviser to the government was "an inspired combination".

Bosch Pensionsfonds (BPF) won two awards, for Best Corporate Pension Fund and Best Small European Pension Fund.

The Best Public Pension Fund award went to Denmark's ATP.

The awards ceremony followed a seminar programme which featured a keynote address from European Internal Markets Commissioner Charlie McCreevy and an awards dinner.
