German pension funds have driven a recovery in Spezialfonds after several difficult years for vehicles open only to professional investors.
Pension funds generated the largest share of net inflows, contributing €17.1bn in 2025, €5.9bn more than a year earlier, according to consultancy Kommalpha.
Private non-profit organisations recorded €11.2bn in net inflows, up €4.1bn year on year, while insurance companies added €10bn.
Overall net inflows into Spezialfonds reached €69.7bn in 2025, €27.9bn higher than the previous year, Kommalpha data showed.
The rebound underlines Spezialfonds’ continued role as the main vehicle for indirect capital investment by German institutional investors, according to the consultancy.
After weak net new business in 2023 and 2024, inflows have returned to levels last seen in 2022, although still below the €116.8bn peak recorded in 2021.
Rising interest rates from 2022 weighed on bond valuations within Spezialfonds, while liquidity was redirected towards direct investments, including funds and special purpose vehicles (SPVs).
Net inflows from pension funds and insurance companies fell sharply in 2023, with pension fund allocations dropping to €1.3bn, €35bn below 2022 levels.
Pension funds expand market share
Pension funds and insurance companies remain the two largest investor groups in the German Spezialfonds market.
Pension vehicles, including Versorgungswerke, Pensionskassen, Pensionsfonds and Unterstützungskassen, increased their market share by around 12 percentage points between 2010 and 2025, from 16% to 28%, Kommalpha figures show.
This equates to a €489.6bn rise in pension fund assets in Spezialfonds over the period.
Pension funds held €620.4bn of the €2.23trn invested in Spezialfonds at the end of 2025.
Social security institutions, as well as public and church supplementary pension schemes, also increased their presence, gaining seven percentage points of market share over the same period to reach €225.9bn in assets.
By contrast, insurance companies have lost around 10 percentage points of market share since 2010, with €538.9bn invested in Spezialfonds at the end of last year, according to Kommalpha.
