Timo Löyttyniemi at VER

Timo Löyttyniemi, the high-profile chief executive officer of the State Pension Fund of Finland (Valtion Eläkerahasto, VER), has announced he will retire in early 2026, after reaching retirement age at the end of this year.

Löyttyniemi, a frequent commentator on financial, macroeconomic and geopolitical topics beyond pensions, started as CEO of the €24.2bn buffer fund for Finnish central government staff pensions 22 years ago, taking a break from the role between 2015 and 2019 while he worked in Brussels as vice chair of the Single Resolution Board of the EU.

He said in yesterday’s announcement: “The position as the CEO of VER has been a very interesting one and I have enjoyed it very much,” adding that it had been “a real vantage point in the investment and financial markets.”

“I will continue working as the CEO until early 2026, and I will continue my career in board positions,” he said.

VER said the post of CEO would open for applications in mid-August.
