Iceland Investment and Pensions

Iceland’s pension sector is one of the top-scoring pension systems internationally, occupying the top slots in the Mercer CFA Institute Global Pension Index study. At around €55bn in 2024-25, Iceland’s total pension assets are low by international comparison but equate to 188% of the small country’s annual GDP. Since the 2008-11 banking collapse and the subsequent imposition of capital controls, the country’s DC pension funds have been gradually restoring their foreign asset allocations. These averaged 42% by the end of 2025 – a proportion the central bank expects to grow further in 2026. The number of pension funds has been shrinking since the 1980s as funds merge to cut costs and achieve economies of scale. The consolidation trend in the sector intensified in 2025 and 2026 with more mergers than before being both explored and finalised. Amendments to the 1997 Pensions Act in the summer of 2026 increased asset allocation freedom for Icelandic pension funds, and specifically the scope for investing in unlisted assets.
