Gabriel Bernardino, former chair of the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) and current chair of the board of directors at the Portuguese securities market commission, Comissão do Mercado de Valores Mobiliários (CMVM), has resigned.

He is stepping down due to health reasons and has requested a replacement is hired as soon as possible.

In a statement, he said: “A health problem has increasingly conditioned me, and that has not allowed me the total dedication and commitment that I consider essential for the leadership that the CMVM deserves and needs, both nationally and internationally.”

Bernardino joined the CMVM in November 2021, choosing as priorities the promotion of trust, innovation and agility in the CMVM and in the Portuguese capital market.

In February 2022, the CMVM board of directors approved an action plan for the next three years which will continue to be implemented as planned, CMVM stated.

The plan reflects the organization’s commitment to its mission of regulating and supervising the Portuguese financial instruments market and the entities that operate in it, protecting investors and guaranteeing the stability, integrity and development of the Portuguese capital market.

A spokeswoman told IPE that the Portuguese Finance Ministry will be in charge of naming Bernardino’s replacement soon.
